I am a sinner amongst honest people. I am supposed to be vegetarian but I have the worst morals ever. I like the taste of bacon, I miss my mother's home cooked roast, I even like a well killed stake. My reasons for being vego:
Environment- The amount of environmental degradation that goes on to produce meat is phenomenal. From the gases produced by the animals to the way their hooves damage the land. Not to mention the amount of water used, the fuel necessary to cart the animals around from cattle yard, abattoir and then to the super market... The production of meat is environmentally damaging. (Side note: Chicken is the most economical and least environmentally damaging)
Ethical- Think about it. Animals have feelings too! If it's illegal to torture an animal, why can we kill them? Not to mention the way the killing is done. I mean if we all had our own animals (sheep, pig, cattle ect) and killed them ourselves and fed the family/village it wouldn't be such a big deal. But it's not like that. It's mass slaughter, to satisfy our ignorance.
Diet: Those of you who know me will recognize I am no super model (I'm a definite size 14 but thats due to my love affair with chocolate, wine, cheese and the couch) but meat isn't as healthy for you as you think. It takes AGES for your body to break down and digest properly. Many Triathletes are vegan/vegetarian. You CAN get all the nutrients from meat from plant sources. It's just in different amounts. Think nuts, legumes, and other varied food types.
I was watching Dr. Tim Flanery on Big Ideas (ABC T.V.) and he reckons we can be green and still eat meat so maybe there is hope for us yet....
